Republican vs. Democratic Conventions
In Pure Politics on September 5, 2008 at 11:44 pm
For my first post of the blog, I think it is important to disclose my political ideology and who I intend to vote for. I consider myself a young moderate Republican. I am unable to identify with the far-right or far-left. Generally I support Republican candidates, however I have voted for Democrats. I base my vote on a candidates policies, not their party. I plan to vote for John McCain on November 04, 2008. I have followed the election very closely since the beginning of the primaries, yet it was not until last night (the final night of the Republican convention) that I was positive of my vote.
I watched every single major speech of both the Republican and Democratic conventions. Both conventions were powerful and instilled in me, as I am sure it did in many others, a unique feeling of patriotism only possible in America.
I have never been a supporter of Hilary Clinton or her policies, however the impact she had on this election is admirable. During the tribute video to Hilary which preceded her speech, I actually got rather filled up. I was also emotional watching the tribute to Senator Edward M. Kennedy (a politician who I have never agreed with or even liked). Ofcourse, like many of you, I could not help but feel proud and inspired when listening to Obama. I think that the democratic convention contained some of the most uplifting and inspiring moments American politics have seen in the last five decades.
When the Republican convention began I was curious and skeptical. Who is Sarah Palin and what kind of person is she? Would I feel comfortable with her in the White House? What does she stand for? Well, I did some research of my own and then I watched her speech. While her speech was inspiring, it did not compare to the grand emotional appeal of the democrats. However, she took a stand on issues and she offered solutions. (I will save the campaign positions for another post) Senator McCain addressed the important issues head on. He rallied the crowd to fight with him. His life experiences prove that he puts the interests of his country before his party and before his own.
While the Democratic convention evoked emotion and hope, it did not present answers to today’s most pressing foreign and domestic policy issues. I am not voting for a story of hope. I am not voting on an emotional whim. I am voting for a candidate that will protect American and leave the world a better place than it is today.
